How To Do Roof Repairs?

The roof is the primary line of defense of any property and saves the inhabitants from external elements like harsh weather, animals, and intruders. Things get worse if a roof is damaged.

Even a minor leakage can become disastrous as water can seep into the structure of the building. This is why it is recommended to conduct regular inspections of your roofs. This article will shed light on roof repairs.

Consider Safety Regulations First

Repairing a leaky roof can turn dangerous if you lack knowledge and tools. This is why it is extremely important to consider all the safety standards before starting a repair task. It is extremely important to start work with a helper.

Always avoid working on a wet or snowy roof as slips can occur, resulting in serious catastrophic impacts. Wear slip-resistant shoes before commencing work. Wear all other personal protective equipment including a helmet, ear protection, gloves, and a standard mask.

Always wear a fall arrest system and hook it with solid support to protect you in case of a fall. There are other such detailed safety precautions that you can consult from the OSHA publication “protecting roofing workers”.

The Process Of Repairing Roofs

The roof is composed of durable materials and can last for decades but it is extremely important to inspect it regularly. Rain gutters are an essential part of roofs that keep them dry. Inspect your gutters after every rainfall or during the rain.

Make sure there is adequate ventilation in your roof or attic. They evaporate any moisture that comes through into the home and do not allow it to cause any damage. Flashing is potentially the weaker spots of your roofs. They are the weaker spots on your roof but repairing them is an easy task. If you find any issue within your roof, act as soon as possible.

Check the Roof Vents

Roof vents are the major cause of leakage. They are composed of several components including attic fans, turbines, and other such things. If you feel that they are leaked, return to your roof and keenly observe them. Check the housings and dislodged nails holding the vents to the roof.

Remove the Damaged Vents

After identifying the damaged roof vents remove them. With the help of a pry bar take out the nails that are holding the shingles to the vent. Use it again to pull back the shingles from the base of the vents. Instead of removing the shingles remove the nails that hold the vent to the roof deck. At the end remove the vent.

Replace the Damaged Roof Vents With New Ones

Apply roofing cement on the bottom of the vent’s metal covering. Ask the helper to carefully lift and move the shingles while you push the vent in between them. Once new roof vents are installed use nails to secure them. Put more cement on top of the nails to make them waterproof.

Inspect and Repair the Old Roofing Shingles

If the leakage is due to the damaged roof deck, remove some shingles and identify the damaged part. Slide a pry bar under the shingles starting from the bottom and move upwards to the top of the roof. Always begin about two rows of the shingles where you need to fix them. Move downwards gradually row by row and repeat the same process.

Replace the Old Roofing Paper

The roofing paper is a barrier between the roof deck and the shingles. By using a utility knife cut and remove this paper. Always try to keep it in the best condition as much as you can.

Use Chalk to Mark the Damaged Roof Part

Use a chalk line to mark a straight line down the roof rafter on both sides of the damaged roof deck. This helps to create a precise guide for the repair work.

Remove the Damaged Roof Deck

Since the damaged part is identified by the chalk. Use a circular saw blade depth to cut down the damaged deck. Once the part is cut down safely remove it.

Cut New Roof Deck Patch With Proper Measurements

As you have the damaged roof deck part, use it and properly measure it from all dimensions. Use this measurement and mark it dimensions of the new roof deck. Cut the new roof patch on the ground for accuracy.

Install the New Roof Deck Patch

Place the new roof deck patch on the roof and nail it into the place with the help of appropriate nails.

Place the Paper Again

Start from bottom to up and use roofing nails to secure the roofing paper. Ensure overlapping each row for at least 4 inches to create a watertight barrier.

Install the Shingles

Begin with the bottom row and install the first row of the new shingles. Fix the new shingles into the existing ones by moving from left to right. Put roofing cement along the bottom edge of the shingles. Use the nails to secure the shingles and ensure they are installed properly.

Continue the same process until you reach the top of the shingles. Similarly, integrate the new shingles into the existing ones by adjusting them properly. This will ensure a flawless balance and cohesion between the new and the old shingles.
